Certification as a Superintendent of Schools and PRAXIS Information
A candidate does not need to have a certification certificate in order to apply for a superintendent's position through CABE Superintendent Search Consultants. However, it is recommended that you complete the enclosed application form (Form ED 170) to begin the process for certification. You will be requested to submit official transcripts of undergraduate and graduate work in addition to other information. The endorsement code on the back of the form under Endorsement #1 would be 93 (Superintendent certification). After applying, a consultant in the certification bureau will determine your eligibility for certification. The type and duration of certificate issued will depend on your education and experience. Candidates who have completed an approved planned program specific to the superintendency, or have a minimum of 20 school months of appropriate experience in other states, may qualify for a Connecticut certificate based on appropriate experience and course work in another state. For Connecticut certification, it is required to have a masters degree plus 30 graduate credits in specific course work for superintendent certification, in addition to eight years of teaching and administrative experience.
Connecticut does not participate in the NASDTEC Interstate contract for administration. Candidates have to meet Connecticut's experience, course work and testing requirements. Individuals seeking certification in Connecticut must fulfill the essential skills requirement by taking and passing all three Praxis I Computer-Based Tests (CBTs) in reading, writing and mathematics or by fulfilling one of the waiver options:
-
official notification of a total score of 1000 or more on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) with neither the mathematics nor the verbal subtest scores below 400 points from any test administration on or prior to March 31, 1995; or a combined score of 1100 or more with no less than 450 on either the verbal or the mathematics subtests from test administrations on or after April 1, 1995, OR
-
no less than 22 on the English subtest and no less than 19 on the mathematics subtest on the American College Testing (ACT) program assessment from test administrations on or after October 1989, or the equivalent ACT scores of no less than 20 on the English and 17 on the mathematics, from test administrations prior to October 1989, OR
-
a passing score on the CONNCEPT test or a test waiver granted before 1/1/95
Registration procedures, fees, and forms, as well as test dates and locations, are included in The Praxis Series Registration Bulletin, which is available at college and university teacher education offices, at university test centers, from the Connecticut State Department of Education, or from Educational Testing Service at the following address:

You may qualify for a 12 month deferral which delays fulfillment of the Praxis I Computer-Based Test if you completed your certification program in another state and do not hold any other Connecticut certification. 1/10/99
