The Connecticut Association of Boards of Education is delighted that Education Commissioner Miguel Cardona has been selected by President-Elect Biden to be Secretary of Education. We know that Dr. Cardona is a hard-working, thoughtful and innovative individual, who is collaborative in style, empathetic in his approach to education, and sensitive to the needs of all students, especially those who are learning English or have disabilities.
During the time he has served as Commissioner, he has worked closely with education partners, including CABE, keeping us informed at least weekly of new developments during the Coronavirus crisis. While he provides updates, he always provides time to hear the concerns of school boards, superintendents, principals and teachers.
CABE President Donald Harris stated that "Miguel is a great champion of equity and diversity for all students. He is bright, sensitive, collaborative, and a pleasure to work with."
While we are sorry that Dr. Cardona will leave the State Department of Education, his new nationwide post will give him a much wider platform and opportunity to influence the education of many millions of children. That will be a huge positive for our nation.
Dr. Cardona works hard for public education and we believe that the relationship with boards of education and other members of our education community will be immensely improved with Dr. Cardona in this powerful new position.
