School Board Ethics and Conduct: A Policy Perspective

School board members enter into board service with the best intentions. The desire to improve education is the reason most people seek a position on their local school board. As experience soon indicates though, it is not that simple!

Good intentions as a basis for board membership are not enough. School board members bring varied backgrounds, strengths and beliefs to the table. As a result, boards can deteriorate into cliques, factions, isolationists and "me-first's."

This publication will address the important issues of school board ethics and conduct. Ethics, a code of conduct and board member and board effectiveness are intertwined. Board member ethics form the basis for the code of behavior by which board members should conduct themselves. Actions which are guided by a sound, ethical code of conduct will help produce board member effectiveness and enhance the positive work of the entire board and allow you and your board the best opportunity to improve education.
